Appendix K - Tone Detection and Auto Wavelength Feature
Many fiber optic light sources are able to send modulated optical signals into optical fibers. Modulated signals are useful for two
purposes: tone detection and automatic wavelength switching.
Tone Detection - A detector equipped to sense a modulated signal can alert the user to the presence of a modulated signal in
the fiber. This is useful because many communication wavelengths are above the infra-red spectrum and are therefore invisible to
the human eye. When configured for tone detection, the FiberMeter can identify the presence of a modulated signal, and inform
the user what its frequency is (either 270Hz, 330Hz, 1KHz, or 2KHz).
Automatic Wavelength Switching - Many light sources use modulated signals to tell an optical power meter which
wavelength is being emitted. The FiberMeter can be configured to switch its wavelength based upon the modulated frequency
being detected. Let’s use the following configuration as an example: 270Hz could be used for 850nm, 330Hz could be used for
1300nm, 1KHz could be used for 1310nm, and 2KHz could be used for 1550nm. Thus, if the FiberMeter detected a 330Hz
signal from the light source, it would know that the light source is sending 1300nm light and switch the wavelength automatically.
